Learning Activity – Studio Lighting

Name three lighting sources and their functions.

Key light: it’s the main light in your photo and, cast hard shadows and highlights.

Fill light: The fill light works with the key light and soften the shadows. The fill light is not as bright as the key light.

Back light: The backlight makes the model stand out from the background and helps making the image not stick to the background.

Name two light modifiers and explain the difference between them.

Softbox: makes the light smooth and spreads out the light.

Snoot: allows the photographer to control the amount of light and creates a spotlight effect.

Draw a diagram of and describe the three-point lighting setup.

Draw three studio setups for the following subject matters and list all the equipment that you would use to light your subjects:

In a magazine or on the Internet, find one fashion shot, a beauty shot and a portrait shot and explain how you think the lighting was set up in each shot.

Fashion: I think they used a softbox at the right side as the key light and also have a softbox aimed at the background at the right side as well.

Portrait: Here I think the key light is a snoot placed on the middle left side and also has a softbox in front of the model.

Beauty: In this picture I think there is only a softbox placed on top of the camera and also black walls on the side of the model to create contrast.
